Welcome to the new week!

Welcome to the new week!  Mondays are a busy day for us as the grandchildren all have dance lessons at different times during the afternoon and so we tend to have a fairly relaxed morning.  We do team clean up of rooms and lots of arts and crafts usually.   Today we worked on our Australia core study unit using the book ‘Australia Country of Colour’ by Jess Racklyeft which I purchased from Big W, modelling clay and YouTube videos.  Each child picked an animal, plant or insect from each colour section of the book and made a modelling clay version of their choice. Once they completed this they showed each other their creation and discussed them. We then watched videos of the animal, plant or insect that they chose and discussed things that we each found interesting about them. A metre long ruler and a grain of rice was used to compare sizes mentioned in the book or videos, bringing Mathematics into the mix of subjects covered.  We all enjoyed this and it was wonde...

Australia core study

We have signed up for Simply Homeschool and are presently working on the ‘A is for Australia’ core program, which we are all enjoying.  As the children range in age from nine down to four and two of them are Autistic, we are adapting some lessons to better suit their different abilities and special needs.  Grace worked on the Australian map lesson this week, a task which we adapted, and she has done wonderful work on it so far.  She traced a map of Australia, cut out the tracing paper, stuck it to a piece of cardboard and painted around the cut out to achieve the desired outcome.  Next week she will be continuing to add details and decorations to this poster!

Modelling Clay fun!

We have been having fun this week with modelling clay!   Gracie decided to make a boiled egg and egg cup, dog and other creations. Sam made a turtle and Among Us figurines. Rosalie made a birds nest and eggs. While Lorelei made a puppy.

The grandchildren and I have been enjoying watching the My Place television series on ABC iview; so much so we were inspired to purchase the book ‘My Place’ by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins.  It is a beautiful book, which we have all enjoyed reading and discussing together!  In our opinion these two resources, used together combined with  this  website, which supports the use of the My Place television series for primary and lower secondary level studies, are wonderful resources for homeschoolers. Welcome to Homeschooling Oma’s musings!

Image
Welcome to my homeschooling Oma’s musings blog!  I am Tracy, an Oma who lives in a multigenerational home with my husband, son, daughter, son in law and four gorgeous grandchildren.  Our grandchildren started homeschooling over a year ago and I was invited by my daughter and son in law to assist them with the children's homeschooling journey from the very beginning; which is something I feel very blessed to be a part of. Our homeschoolers are Grace, Samuel, Rosalie and Lorelei and they range in age between nine and four.  The three oldest children are state registered and approved for homeschooling, with Lorelei joining in voluntarily because she wants ‘to do homeschool too!’. Both Samuel and Rosalie are Autistic, so adaptations are made to cater for their special needs on a daily basis.  The past year flew by so quickly and we have seen so many positive outcomes from homeschooling already.  They are all eager, curious learners and are all passionate about books...
